‘Singin’ in the Rain’ a tour-de-force

Friday, March 24, 2017

The template for local theatre reviews is pretty basic.

If you're gonna criticize, do it gently, and wherever possible, accentuate the positive.

It's the same way Canadian critics review Canadian films and TV shows that wouldn't warrant a second look across the border.

Be patriotic. Support the home team. Don't kvetch.

So it is with great pleasure that I toss out this tired, condescending custom to pronounce "Singin' In The Rain," without toadying, one of the 10 best Drayton Entertainment productions of all time.

Gettin’ a jump on April showers by Singin’ in the Rain

Thursday, March 23, 2017

“That glorious feeling” of singing and dancing through puddles is what Drayton Entertainment is looking to give audiences in its production of Singin’ in the Rain.

Starting this weekend at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse, Drayton performers will be taking the stage, bringing theatre goers back to the days of silent films. Based on the classic film starring Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly, the story is a spoof of the troubles movie studios encountered in the 1920s when movies went from silent to talkies. Main character Don Lockwood, played by Kelly, is the lead of a film the studio wants to turn into a talkie. There is a problem, however, when it is discovered, his leading lady, Lina Lamont, doesn’t sound too great on the audio tracks. After a chance meeting with chorus girl Kathy Selden, Lockwood brings her on to record all of Lamont’s lines and songs to be featured in the new movie. Lamont isn’t happy about being dubbed over by a chorus girl and hijinks ensue.

'Singin’ in the Rain' brings dancer back to the local stage

Monday, March 20, 2017

Local dancer Jay T. Schramek, who has made a name for himself as a Dora Mavor nominated performer, returns to the Drayton stage in the production of Singin’ in the Rain opening this week at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.

It’s been a while since Jay T. Schramek has performed on a local stage.

He moved to Toronto to pursue his dance career and worked as a voiceover artist, and comes back to the community to teach the art of tap dancing at local dance school, Dimensions in Dance. But it’s been some time since he’s clicked his toes on the local stage.

Talented cast leads Drayton's 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

Drayton Entertainment’s season opener is the crowd-pleasing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

This show is coming up to its 50th anniversary next year. It was first performed as a cantata in 1968 at a boys’ school in London, England. The show has come a long way since, and Drayton’s 2017 offering is a far cry from those cantata days. It is full of colourful costumes, energetic choreography and cleanly-executed stagecraft — a surefire hit for families.

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

There’s a song in my head, and it won’t go.

And Jamie McKnight put it there.

McKnight is playing the title role in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Drayton Entertainment’s flagship show that will play at 4 theatres over this season. If you know even a little bit about this musical, chances are you’ll agree with me that this is an inspired choice. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Monday, March 6, 2017

Drayton Entertainment has kicked off its 2017 season with a hugely enjoyable production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Director Max Reimer, designers Jean Claude Olivier and Rachel Berchtold and the cast have struck exactly the right note in presenting this jokey rock musical written by the teenaged Andrew Lloyd Webber. Like Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar (1971), Joseph is really a staged rock oratorio since there is no spoken dialogue. Unlike Superstar, however, Joseph is deliberately aimed at an audience of children and includes an onstage children’s chorus. The trick is to find a middle ground that will make the show appealing to adults as well as children and that’s exactly what Drayton’s Joseph team has achieved.

This Joseph is Faster and Funnier

Monday, March 6, 2017

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – it’s been very popular with both regional theatre and community theatre ever since Donnie Osmond played the title role in Toronto. The production of this audience favourite, now on stage at the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge, is the best I’ve seen, thanks to faster action and funnier performances.

Drayton Entertainment tapping into 'what's in the water' of youth talent

Monday, February 13, 2017

There are several ways to measure success.

One would be Drayton Entertainment graduating about 180 children from last year’s inaugural Youth Musical Theatre Program. Another would be finding a diamond in the rough within the program — Kitchener preteen Ryan O’Donnell was cast as Greg Scott in Marathon of Hope The Musical, The Terry Fox Story.

With those results after just one summer, it should come as little surprise Drayton Entertainment officials decided to expand the program.

'Marathon of Hope: The Musical' promises fresh insight into Terry Fox Story

Sunday, October 2, 2016

Connolly said the songs are very much rooted in Canadian folk music, in the vein of iconic homegrown singer-songwriters Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.

"Terry loved old-time country music, so I've tried to respect that. He also loved to speak directly and from the heart, so I've tried to do that in the lyrics. So, I would say the whole thing is rootsy."

To inhabit the role, Carroll grew out his naturally curly locks to bear a closer resemblance to Fox. He examined the runner's vocal patterns and physicality in an effort to strike a balance between the real-life figure and his own artistic interpretation.

Canada’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Deejay

A fascinating story is being told on stage at the cabaret-style Schoolhouse Theatre in St. Jacobs.   Here in Ontario we aren’t familiar with this west coast legend, so this lively little musical is actually an educational experience as well as very entertaining.  We learn about ground-breaking disc jockey Red Robinson, the first person in Canada to spin rock ‘n’ roll vinyl on the air.  Until Red came along, no one in our country had dared to play this crazy new devil’s music on the radio.

Though Drayton's new show "Red Rock Diner" delves into a seminal time in Canada's rock 'n' roll history, that interesting tidbit is never fully explained.

Apparently, Vancouver's CJOR radio DJ Red Robinson was one of the first to play the music of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and others on regular rotation in Canada in the mid-1950s when this raucous style of music was becoming popular. The DJ was inaugurated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 — a fact that, if presented, would have made what unfolds on stage ever more impressive.
